Among those who have used these services, large majorities of both men and women say that they felt excited or happy when communicating with potential matches. However, almost half of current online daters report that they have also experienced negative emotions such as insecurity, frustration, and disappointment.

The most common reasons for using an online dating site or app include finding a long-term partner, casual dating, and social interaction. Compared to straight men and women, LGB men are more likely to cite casual sex as a reason for using these sites or apps (31% vs. 13%).
The vast majority of American adults think that it is important for companies to run background checks on users before they create a profile. This is particularly true for older adults: 62% of adults ages 65 and older say this, compared to 43% of adults 50 to 64 and 32% of adults under age 50. These differences may reflect the fact that many online dating services are geared towards different user groups and/or that the ways people use these services differ across generations.
